Putting the alternative back into comedy…

In a recent Guardian article – Stand Up Comics Hit The Boom Time – Eddie Izzard’s promoter, Mick Perrin, predicted: ‘There will be a reaction against the TV-slick professionalisation of comedy… there’s a punk revolution brewing…’

Fuckin’ A! It’s been a quarter of a century since alternative comedy turned the industry on its head and it is long overdue another shake-up. Read more »

ROBERT WHITE – “A jaw-dropping riot… mix of lewd innuendo, cheesy jokes, music hall songs played on a knackered keyboard and sound-effects games… side-splitting.” (The List)
DR BROWN – A visual and surreal Dadaist, absurdist act of downright uncomfortable weirdness that goes strange places, turns left then goes even stranger.
LEWIS SCHAFFER – Chortle called this unpredictable American “angry and downright offensive”.The Scotsman said “his jokes might have another comic arrested”.
BOB SLAYER (MC) – “Anarchic” is an understatement for the former jockey and unemployed alcoholic turned tour manager, B-movie film star and rock & roll comedian.

Give it up Fringe Whingers – Edinburgh in Aug is still a magical place…

In times gone by we would happily throw our turds into the street, that was until those meddling Victorians decided to build a sewerage system that efficiently took our waste away. Sigh… Things just aren’t what they used to be… And so it is in Comedy, everyone from Stewart Lee to Harry from the Fix seems keen to bemoan the fact that the Fringe is not the same as it used to be – No shit Sherlock, things move on. “The most talked about show amongst our members… A unique and joyous experience that is so unpredictable it is scary…”

“An act clearly more drunk than the audience…” Three Weeks

“Bob Slayer’s gobsmackingly anarchic Punk Rock Chat Show is the pure unadulterated spirit of the true Fringe…” Whatsonstage:

“Bob Slayer worked through his paying guests with amazing skill, incredibly rude comedy, outrageous stories and scenes which left us emotionally scarred, yet in fits of laughter…” Three Weeks

“Go and see Fringe stalwart Stewart Lee, rising star Andrew Lawrence and exciting fringe newcomer Bob Slayer…” The Metro Pick of The Fringe:

“This is what happens when real rock, comedy and a lot of drink mix together, and it should never be any other way.” Three Weeks

“Full of energy and daring, eager to get amongst the audience…” The New Current

Bob Slayer’s Punk Rock Chat Show @ Edinburgh Fringe

A review from Simon Donald (the Man from Viz):
“Bob Slayer’s gigs are made of the stuff that, although once commonplace in alternative comedy, is sadly hard to find nowadays… They are unpredictable, joyfully, silly and as likely to go horribly wrong as they are to succeed magnificently… A sublime shambles that is not just another night out, but an experience you’re unlikely to forget.”

6:15pm @ The Hive (313)
15 – 17 Niddry Street, EH1 1LG (5th to 22nd Aug)

“Wild liberating banter, games and stories from a rock’n'roll tour manager who has travelled the world with Stooges, Electric Eel Shock, Bloodhound Gang etc. Punk rock comedy: no rules, no limits, no refunds!

My memory of Frank Sidebottom (RIP)

I found Frank backstage at last year’s Bizarre Ball and I gave him a few beers out of Electric Eel Shock’s rider. We sat drinking a beer together watching the various performers prepare or recover: naked people getting into rubber, a woman from the Circus of Horrors getting out of a bottle and a psycho cyborg having her tits sewn back up. It was quite a scene. Frank turned and said:
“Of course I have seen it all before… although not necessarily quite so much all at the same time.”

He was a lovely man and a one off.

Some of My Favourite Stand Up Comedians

Johnny Vegas – I first saw him perform at the Talk Of London in maybe 1999 in a tour sponsored by Hob Nob biscuits. A shambolic genius!
Phil Kay – Wild and free, Phil Kay has been around for years and still obviously enjoys it. His secret seems to be that if you don’t worry about material then you can’t get bored of it.
Phil Nichol – His stage presence is amazing full of infectious energy, with brilliant stories too
Jethro – a fantastic ‘old school’ story teller, who looks like he just loves being on stage
Freddie Star – I met him at Warwick Races in the 80′s around the time I was a Jockey, he’s still going!
Chris Lynam – The first time I went to the Comedy Store in the 80′s I remember seeing Jo Brand but the act that made the most impression was Chris with a banger up the bum!
Lenny Bruce – The original alternative comedian who broke more new ground than anyone else
Dave Thompson – The man who was Tinky Winky brilliantly headlined the first comedy gig I promoted at Dirty Dicks and we have since done several gigs together including a great trip to the French Alps.
Dave Allen – Another forerunner of Alternative Comedy
Martin Soan – The king of prop comedy who has been going for over 30 years and yet his mind is always creating. The most wonderful spirit x
Andy Kaufman – The Emperor of confusion and misdirection through events and actions
Tommy Cooper – The Prime Minister of getting it beautifully wrong

Paul Foot – a Unique comedy hero who tackles everything from his own angle. He has made me laugh loud and hard at things I could never explain afterwards.
Dr Brown – I made friends with Dr Brown the first time I did anything at Edinburgh Fringe and he continues to inspire
Hugh Hughes – Is more likely presented as an artist / theatre but nonetheless is one of the most inspirational performers I have ever seen
Rob Broderick / Abandoman
The Boy With Tape On His Face
